Read this first

No major AI company says its AI tools read llms.txt. Publishing one costs little, and it is a tidy summary for people and tools that do look for it. Do not expect it to change what AI tools say about you, and we never count it in your score.

Draft a new llms.txt

We read the home page, robots.txt and your sitemap.
We guess it from your site if you leave this empty.
What you do, for whom. Plain words.

Check an llms.txt you already have

We open /llms.txt at the root of your site.
Or paste the file instead
If you paste text, we do not fetch your site.

What llms.txt is

An llms.txt file is a short text file at the root of a website. It lists the pages that matter most, with a line on each, so a tool can find them without reading the whole site. The format was proposed in September 2024 and is published at llmstxt.org (we read it on 31 October 2026).

No major AI company says its AI tools use the file. Some tools do read it, mostly on sites that document software. So treat it as a tidy summary, not as a way to rank. We never count it in a score.

What the generator does

The generator reads your home page, your robots.txt and your sitemap. It takes your site name and description from the home page, unless you type your own. It picks up to 30 pages from your menu and your sitemap, and skips logins, carts and legal pages. For the first few pages it adds a line from each page's own meta description. Pages that matter less go under a section called "Optional".

What the validator checks

The validator opens /llms.txt on your site, or reads the text you paste. It checks the file against the published format:

  • Title (H1). The first line starts with "# " and gives your name. This is the only part the format requires.
  • Summary. A line that starts with "> " right after the title. The format calls for it, so we flag it when it is missing.
  • Sections of links. Each section starts with "## ". Inside it, each line is a link in the form - [Page name](https://yoursite.com/page): optional notes.
  • Other headings. The format uses only the H1 and H2 sections, so we flag "###" headings.
  • Full addresses. We flag links that do not start with https://, so a tool that reads the file on its own can open them.

How to read the results

Good means the item follows the format. Check means it works, but a tool may read it in a way you did not mean. Problem means the item breaks the format, for example a file with no title or a web page where the text file should be. Note is for your information only. If there is no file at all, that is fine: the file is optional.

Example: our own file

We ran the validator on the llms.txt of aipickcheck.com on 31 October 2026. The first run found one problem: our Contact section listed an email address as plain text, not as a link. We changed it to a link. On the next run every item was Good: one title, a summary, and sections of links.

We also ran the generator on our own site. It drafted a file with 30 links from our menu and sitemap, the most it lists. It also told us that a file already exists, and suggested comparing the two before replacing anything.

Common fixes

  • The address shows a web page, not a text file. Your server sends a "not found" page. Upload the file to the root of your site, next to robots.txt.
  • No title. Add one line at the very top: # Your business name.
  • Lists that are not links. Turn each item into - [Name](https://…). Move other text above the first section.
  • Old pages. Remove links that redirect or no longer exist. An out-of-date file is worse than none.

Questions people ask

Do AI tools read llms.txt?

No major AI company says its AI tools use it. The format was proposed by a developer and is read by some tools, mostly for documentation sites. We list it as informational and never count it in a score.

Is there any harm in publishing one?

Little. Keep it short, accurate and in step with your site. An out-of-date file that points to old pages is worse than none.

What should I do instead if I want AI tools to understand my site?

Put the key facts as plain text on the page, allow the search bots, and keep your business listings consistent. The other tools here check those.
